Back in 2010, I was awarded a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to write about the way Britain handles immigration and asylum applications. The idea was to provide clarity and accuracy on an issue reported on only sporadically by the media, too often misrepresented by politicians and misunderstood by the public.
Britain’s immigration debate is nearly identical to others taking place across the European Union, so I decided to report from four other European countries for balance and perspective. In January this year I spent six weeks travelling around Greece, Italy, Spain and France interviewing asylum seekers and migrants about their experiences.
The blog posts here are just some of the moving and often harrowing stories of the people I met, many caught up in the EU’s complex and onerous immigration process. My final report will be published in September.
